Today Show beauty expert apologizes for messed up makeover

Last week, beauty expert Deepica Mutyala, had the unfortunate experience of having a live beauty segment go horribly wrong.

Mutyala, serving as the on-air beauty pro on a Today Show segment titled “One minute summer hair,” fumbled while styling a black woman’s natural hair.

The model’s hair, which was supposed to have been styled in a high ponytail with bangs, ended up looking wind-blown and ragged as if it had not been styled at all.

The video of the show went viral and drew comments ranging from criticism of Mutyala and her hair styling skills to criticism of the Today Show for promoting someone untrained as an expert.

Mutyala took to social media with an apology:

This time around, Mutyala seemed to have more champions than critics. Many people were surprised to see an actual apology without the usual ton of excuses.

From most of the responses, it looks like all is forgiven.

Seriously? The Today Show issued an apology on AUGUST 8TH!!! Is the AJC just hiring random people to scour the web for "stories" that are this old?! Same thing for the story posted about 35 minutes ago regarding the obituary posted by a deceased man's wife and girlfriend that went viral around AUGUST 5TH!

She did a video with some other stylist to undo her mistake. #apologyaccepted

As a licensed stylist I was watching online and wondering a) has this woman even been trained at all? b) how do I get that job since I actually am trained. Natural hair gives you a ton of texture and built in volume to work with. Would it have been that hard to do a quick cute braid or chignon? Expert? Pffft.

She should not call herself an expert if you are not well versed in all hair types. That was a mess

A step in the right direction to own up to her mistake

She should be embarrassed & use the word "expert" very loosely from now on!

Could you have at least shown a photo of the messed up look?

She should be! That girl went on national television thinking she was going to look nice not fresh out of a hurricane! Cosmetology schools need to teach how to work with ANY kind of hair.

It's good that she apologized, however, every hairstyle was horrendous, even her own

Really....in the big scheme of things this is news??? And people are so focused on this kind of crap that's only cosmetic?? Go natural and you don't have to worry about someone screwing up!! For God's sake, be sad over something important!!

All three styles were horrid, I can imagine what this has done to her career.

She should quit her day job. The whole segment was a train wreck.

There wasn't anything wrong with the models hair in the first place. You knew your limitations as a stylist. Why didn't you just admit you couldn't style black hair. All of the hair styles were horrible!

Oh the mess was not just on the black ladies hair, all of them looked like their hair was styled in the dark by 2nd graders. Carla Hill Williams the network heard the public screaming "what the what was that"

These comments are so funny. She was dead wrong trying to pass as an expert stylist.

Who checked her qualifications? She did a horrid job at everyone's hair, not just the black woman's. Not everyone is qualified for ethnic hair due to its different texture and requirements for maintenance, but she made even the white girls hair look crazy.

I am glad that she apologized, because she simply do not know how to style black women hair in its natural state.

It's great that she apologized, it was awesome that she didn't create excuses.....very good.

Yeah, but it was still nice because most times excuses are made and apologies are disregarded. I appreciated that she didn't offer excuses. Even socially given, most wouldn't have apologize.

She only apologized after it made news and social media. I don't think it's genuine.

She should be apologetic. Now the executives can Change her title from expert to "need training". And just think if she was in a salon doing jacked up hairstyle like that..shed get a beat down.
