The wait is over for lovers of deep fried Twinkies looking for an easier way to enjoy their beloved treats.
Hostess Brands has launched a packaged version of the state fair sweets which hit Wal-Mart stores nationwide in the frozen food section.
They cost $4.76 for a box of seven and will be available only at Wal-Mart stores for the first three months, reports the Associated Press.
The treats, which come in chocolate or original golden flavors, are battered and partially fried before they are frozen. Pop them into the oven, toaster oven or frying pan for about 10 minutes to finish them up.
Hostess and Wal-Mart worked together for a year to come up with the treats — part of an ongoing effort to energize food sales with innovative offerings.
Early versions had lumpy batter, according to one Wal-Mart executive. The final version presumably worked out those issues, but with nine grams of fat and 220 calories, the original flavor of the Deep Fried Twinkies is still not to be taken lightly.
It has a “retro cool factor,” said Ellen Copaken, Hostess’ vice president of marketing to the AP. “It plays into the comfort food trend. And it’s fun.”
