Georgia Lottery officials in search of a missing millionaire

The clock is ticking for the winner of about $7.5 million dollars.

A lottery ticket sold in Georgia this summer took half of the $15 million Mega Millions jackpot, but thus far, no one has stepped forward to claim it.

Georgia Lottery officials are calling it the case of the missing millionaire.

The winning ticket is one of two that split the July 22 Mega Millions jackpot prize. It was sold at Kroger, 8876 Dallas Acworth Highway in Dallas.

The other jackpot prize-winning ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Gainesville, Virginia. That winner also has not yet come forward to claim the prize, said a spokesman for the Virginia Lottery.

Mega Millions jackpot winners in Georgia have 180 days (about six months) from the drawing to claim their prize.

If the winner does not come forward after 180 days, the money goes in the Georgia Lottery’s returns to education to help fund the HOPE and Pre-K Programs.

In addition, each year $200,000 of this money is transferred to the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities for education and treatment programs for problem gambling.

It can take a few weeks for prize winners to recover from the shock of winning and step forward to claim their winnings.

Earlier this month, an Atlanta couple came forward to claim the prize they had won in the Sept. 17 Powerball drawing.

William and Heather ten Broeke of Brookhaven purchased the winning ticket at Publix, Town Brookhaven. They elected to take the cash option which totaled $165,613,511 before tax. The couple said they plan to travel, invest, help family and donate the money.

I think the lottery should have a special drawing when the winner doesn't claim the prize.  How do we know a ticket was actually sold.  The GA lottery could make that up and say a winning ticket was sold.
