Six years ago, the hair salon industry was upended with a new concept in service — salons that specialized in all blowouts, all the time.
Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, the most recognized of blow dry bars, was convinced she could offer women an experience somewhere between the overpriced full-service hair salons and the discount salons of questionable quality.
While Webb has largely succeed in that goal — the metro area has two Drybar locations and a host of imitators and competitors — at least one group of women has continued to view the experience with a dose of skepticism.
Despite their best intentions, most blow dry bars have lagged in serving the special hair needs of women of color, particularly those with thick, curly or afro-textured hair.
Some of these women report walking into blow dry bars hoping for a streamlined experience but ending up with multiple stylists struggling to straighten their hair or stylists running in the opposite direction to avoid having to service their highly textured hair.
On May 25, Atlanta-based Colour — the app which allows women of color to order in-home styling services — brings women of color a blow dry bar experience designed just for them.
The Colour Summer Pop-Up Salon will serve clients twice a week, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 1 – 6 p.m. on Sundays, in a VIP space at Inman Park’s Indique Boutique .
Women can enjoy treats and bubbly as they choose from a curated menu of blowouts (with press), twist-outs, and feed-in braids. Prices range from $40 for a twist-out to $85 for the Lady Braid, a signature double halo with fishtail braid using feed in hair. All services include a shampoo and conditioner.
